In what was supposed to be a day for the US to shine in its first hosting of the UCI Championship with the newly minted TDF Champion, Greg Lemond, the US riders did not quite live up to the hopes on a very difficult day. Most of the race was very wet and miserable and anyone feeling the fatigue from the year of racing was definitely not performing at their best. Just before the final lap, three broke away including the first and second place finishers Moreno Argentin and Charly Mottet and Rolf Goelz who would be dropped with about 15k to go. Argentin put an attack on a small climb that seemed to sap the strength of Mottet and the Italian took the win in a very tired looking sprint. Out of the chasing pack, fellow Italian Giuseppe Saronni took the line for third. Race favorite Greg Lemond finished in seventh despite looking fatigued throughout the day. It would be 19 years until another Championship would be hosted in the US.
