What looked to be the perfect Belgian breakaway with Eddy Merckx and neo-pro Freddy Maertens making a powerful move at about 30k remaining, the move was dashed at the line by a surging Felice Gimondi who took the win and Luis Ocaña taking third. Merckx thought Maertens, a powerful young sprinter, had ruined the lead out with too much speed. Regardless, Gimondi had the stongest sprint and took the day.
